Bid Strategy Coach for UK SMEs

Lyndsey Wray

United Kingdom

For more than a decade, I have helped UK SMEs to find and win public and private sector contracts through bid writing, training, and consultancy.

I have always believed that my customers know their business best. Their sector- and industry-specific knowledge and expertise, plus my decades of experience on both sides of procurement, is the ideal recipe for a successful, collaborative approach.

Many of my clients, who initially just needed someone to write a tender response on their behalf, have since benefited from my one to one and team coaching programmes, which are often delivered as support through a live bid.

In addition, as the owner of a small business – just like my clients - I wear many hats, delivering the services offered by the business, alongside developing and maintaining the company’s profile, undertaking the many administrative tasks, and managing the accounts. As the ‘face’ of the business, I have also developed skills in podcasting and videocasting and public speaking.

I left school aged 16 in 1988 and worked, through a YTS, for several local small businesses, including a print shop, estate agents, solicitors and a timber yard among others. I first learned about tendering in the mid ’90s through a marketing role at an office furniture company and most of the marcomms positions I held from then on included bid writing and management. In 2004, I moved to the other side of the procurement process, issuing tenders and contracts for a government agency.

As a contractor for most of my career, I have worked in almost every sector and industry across the UK for SMEs and large corporations.

In 2006 I became fully self-employed, offering a broad range of business development services and in late 2010 I further streamlined these services to focus solely on providing bid writing, consultancy, training and support to UK SMEs.

Today, UK SMEs face more challenges than ever before. The procurement landscape is changing fast, with the automation of data being a driving force behind improvements in procurement processes across the world. While this brings more opportunities for cross-border procurement across Europe (Brexit notwithstanding!), a focus on social, economic and environmental values as well as cost, have made tendering even more critical yet even more competitive and confusing for SMEs than ever before.

The brief pause in workload presented by the events of 2020 gave me an opportunity to re-evaluate my own business model and aims. In early 2022, I made the decision to close UK Bid Writer to new clients and find new ways to help UK SMEs understand and prepare for the huge changes digitisation is bringing to procurement, through expert consultancy, mentoring and coaching.
